Responding to reading through writing a book
At those advanced ages, analyzing, critiquing, and synthesizing texts through their writing had the biggest payoff. Write a Twitter Conversation Students love this!
Students should not be overly concerned with forming a logical order to their notes gathered so far. Encourage them to underline the keywords and phrases. However, that one was easily fixed with a bit of writing instruction and scaffolding.
Reading response example
I love this method because it enables me to have a second reading conference with each of them. And, vice versa. How do you have your students respond to their reading without taking up too much class time? Evidence will most often take the form of a quotation from the text - so make sure your students are comfortable with the mechanics of weaving quotations into their writing! Want them to grasp simile? As individual students speak up, the rest of us jump to their cited text and follow along. I will often begin a thread by posing a question or comment of my own, and the students soon take over. I merely facilitate the conversation, highlighting important points and asking deeper questions when needed. When one of my students asked if it was OK if he made "little movies in his mind" while he read, I knew he understood what visualizing was all about! It can also serve as a structured plan for writing their response. Feel free to use your own style and language but remember to keep it formal. What does the character want to do or achieve? Writing a Text Response: From Prewriting to Polishing Often when we talk about the development of language skills it is useful to discuss things in terms of four distinct areas. Whether the text they are being asked to respond to is an unseen piece in an exam situation, or a piece of coursework based on something that has been studied over a semester, the structure remains the same.
However, reference to literary techniques should not be made merely in passing, but should be integrated into a discussion of the themes being explored in the essay.
Students should be sure to check that they have read the directions for their text response question closely. But be careful too, students should avoid using overly long sentences as longer sentences can be more difficult to control.

At the end of the first semester, I have students write an RR Analysis Paper in which they examine their reading response habits: Do they always gravitate to one type of RR? This one I would probably only introduce when there was an actual benefit for the skill; that is the kids will need the notes to do something else. After the allotted time, students must decide on a yes, no, or maybe response to the central question. Presumably because by then kids could summarize thoroughly without having to think as hard about it. The genre of the text will largely determine which of these should be included and which left out. Teach kids how to do the writing that you are asking them to do, and you level the playing field. A good practice to ensure a student has adequately understood what a question is looking for is to ask the student to paraphrase that question in their own words.
